Eight years after vanishing during the chaos of Hurricane Harvey, a Texas family’s beloved dog is finally back home — thanks to a microchip and a good Samaritan.
Blue, a 2-year-old pup at the time, disappeared in 2017 when the powerful storm tore through Corpus Christi, Texas. Her family’s fence was destroyed in the winds and flooding, and Blue slipped away, seemingly lost for good.
But last week, the unexpected happened.
A passerby found Blue alone in a public bathroom at Cameron Park in Waco — nearly 300 miles from where she originally went missing. The good Samaritan brought the dog to Pet Circle Regional Animal Center, where staff scanned her for a microchip.

“What happened next turned out to be an extraordinary story,” the shelter shared on Instagram.
The microchip revealed Blue’s identity — and led back to the family who had been missing her for nearly a decade. When the shelter contacted them, they were stunned.
“After nearly eight years, the family was overwhelmed with emotion to learn that Blue was safe,” Pet Circle wrote.
Unable to make the full trip right away, Blue’s owner — referred to by the shelter as her “furmom” — met the good Samaritan halfway between Waco and Corpus Christi to reunite with her long-lost companion.
Photos shared by Pet Circle show Blue riding in the back seat of a car and nuzzling with her owner during an emotional reunion.

“This heartwarming reunion is a powerful reminder that microchips work,” the shelter noted. “Because Blue was chipped — and her owner’s contact info was current — she was able to find her way home after nearly a decade.”
Waco residents can help other strays like Blue through the city’s “Fire House to Your House” program, which allows people to bring lost pets to local fire stations to be scanned for microchips.
Blue’s incredible return comes on the heels of several similar stories of dogs lost during Hurricane Harvey being reunited with their families years later. In one case, a 16-year-old dog named Maddie was found four years after going missing during her family’s move. That reunion also began with a microchip — and ended with joyful tears.
For Blue’s family, the message is clear: never lose hope — and always chip your pets.
