President Donald Trump criticized Brown University’s security camera coverage following a deadly shooting at a campus building in Providence, Rhode Island, that killed two people and injured nine others on Saturday.
“Why did Brown University have so few Security Cameras? There can be no excuse for that. In the modern age, it just doesn’t get worse!!!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Suspect Still Unnamed as Investigators Seek Clearer Footage
The shooter remains at large, and police have not publicly identified a suspect. Authorities released videos and photos showing an alleged shooter dressed in all black — including a mask and beanie — walking down a sidewalk hours before the attack.
The absence of clearer video has frustrated investigators and the wider community. No facial images have been released so far. Authorities have described the suspect as stocky and approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall.
Brown President Christina Paxson said Tuesday that the campus has 1,200 cameras, but law enforcement officials say there is no clear video of the shooter from inside the engineering building.
Police say they’ve received around 200 tips. Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez urged residents and businesses in the area on Tuesday to review their own camera systems for any footage that could help identify the gunman.
“We’re looking for a moment that is shorter than someone taking a breath,” Perez said.
Victims Identified; FBI Announces $50,000 Reward
Authorities identified the two victims as Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, a Brown freshman who aspired to become a neurosurgeon, and Ella Cook, 19, a sophomore and a college Republican leader.
The FBI announced a $50,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspect, according to Ted Docks, the FBI Boston Field Office Special Agent in Charge, speaking at a press conference.
Brown University is asking anyone who was in the Barus & Holley Engineering Building on Friday or Saturday to arrange an interview with the Providence Police Department, stating: “Even an incidental detail may be helpful in investigating.”
FBI Says It’s Supporting Local Police “Day and Night”
Investigators said the shooter fired several rounds from a 9mm weapon. There has also been speculation — not confirmed — that the gunman shouted something before opening fire.
On Sunday morning, police detained a 24-year-old man from Wisconsin as a person of interest, but he was released late Sunday night after authorities determined he was “not a person of interest at all,” Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said.
Officials said additional video evidence could be released as the investigation continues.
FBI Director Kash Patel wrote in a post on X that agents are “continuing to work around the clock supporting Providence PD in their investigation,” adding that “we will keep working day and night.”
“Continue praying for the Brown University community,” Patel said.
