President Donald Trump suggested that Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar “probably had herself sprayed” after she was attacked while hosting a town hall in Minneapolis on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Speaking to ABC News’ Rachel Scott, Trump said he hadn’t seen video of the assault before accusing the congresswoman — whom he has criticized for years — of staging the incident.
“I don’t think about her. I think she’s a fraud. She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her,” Trump told the outlet.

What Happened at the Town Hall
During her remarks Tuesday, Omar called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and urged the resignation or impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem when a man in the front row stood up and rushed toward her, according to C-SPAN footage.
The man then sprayed Omar’s shirt with a syringe containing an unknown, strong-smelling substance, the footage showed.
Minneapolis police said the suspect was identified as 55-year-old Anthony Kazmierczak. He was booked into Hennepin County Jail on suspicion of third-degree assault, according to police.
Several people in the audience shouted warnings during the incident, with one voice saying, “He sprayed something,” the video showed.
Footage indicates Kazmierczak was quickly apprehended by security, tackled, and escorted out of the building. Omar’s staff and security urged her to stop and get checked, but she chose to continue, saying, “We will continue. These f—ing a–holes are not going to get away with it.”
“Just give me 10 minutes. I beg you,” she said, according to the video. “Please don’t let them have the show.”
Omar then told the crowd she would not be deterred.
“Here’s the reality that people like this ugly man don’t understand,” she said. “We are Minnesota strong, and we will stay resilient in the face of whatever they might throw at us.”

Omar Responds on X
After the incident, Omar wrote in a post on X: “I’m ok. I’m a survivor so this small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me from doing my work.”
“I don’t let bullies win,” she added. “Grateful to my incredible constituents who rallied behind me. Minnesota strong.”
According to The New York Times, an attendee thanked Omar for staying to finish her remarks.
“I learned at a young age you don’t give in to threats,” Omar replied.
Capitol Police: Suspect in Custody, Charges Being Pursued
The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement that a suspect was in custody after allegedly assaulting a member of Congress.
“Tonight, a man is in custody after he decided to assault a Member of Congress – an unacceptable decision that will be met with swift justice,” the agency said. “We are grateful for the rapid response of onsite security and our local law enforcement partners. We are now working with our federal partners to see this man faces the most serious charges possible to deter this kind of violence in our society.”

Rising Minnesota Tensions and Trump’s Latest Claims
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in Minnesota following the Trump administration’s deployment of ICE and other federal agents to the state.
In recent weeks, two citizens — 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti and 37-year-old mother of three Renee Nicole Good — have been killed by federal agents, prompting demonstrations in Minnesota and nationwide.
The attack on Omar also followed Trump’s comments a day earlier claiming the Department of Justice and Congress were “looking at” the congresswoman. In a Truth Social post on Monday, Jan. 26, he alleged she “left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars. Time will tell all.”
Omar responded on X: “Sorry, Trump, your support is collapsing and you’re panicking,” adding, “Right on cue, you’re deflecting from your failures with lies and conspiracy theories about me. Years of ‘investigations’ have found nothing. Get your goons out of Minnesota.”
