U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that the war between Russia and Ukraine could escalate far beyond the region if leaders continue to “play games,” saying conflicts like this can spiral into a wider world war.
“Things like this end up in third world wars,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “And I told that the other day, I said, ‘You know, everybody keeps playing games like this, you’ll end up in a third world war.’ And we don’t want to see that happen.”
Why It Matters
Trump’s remarks come as the war—sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022—remains stuck in a difficult diplomatic and military stalemate. Negotiations have repeatedly run into the reality that Moscow and Kyiv continue to hold sharply different positions on core issues, including territory and security guarantees.
The president’s warning underscores how closely the conflict is tied to broader international dynamics, with European nations, NATO, and other global powers heavily invested in the outcome as the war nears another anniversary.
What To Know
Trump said he wants an end to the bloodshed, citing heavy losses. “I’d like to see the killing stop: 25,000 people died last month, soldiers—mostly soldiers, but some people also where bombs were dropped,” he said.
He also argued the fighting has limited direct impact on the United States unless the situation expands beyond its current bounds—but stressed that the risk of escalation is exactly what concerns him. The war, he said, “doesn’t really affect the United States unless it got out of control,” warning that it could still spread into a larger global conflict.
Trump said the U.S. is “working very hard” to broker a peace agreement and claimed there is broad support for a deal, while singling out Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as an exception.
Zelensky has consistently maintained that Ukraine will not agree to surrender territory to Russia—an issue tied to what Trump described as his proposed framework.
As Trump framed it, the negotiations are complicated by the territorial stakes. “It’s a little bit complicated because you’re cutting up land in a certain way. It’s not the easiest thing. It’s sort of like a complex real estate deal times a thousand,” he said.
Zelensky also said the Trump administration wanted Ukraine to respond to the peace plan by Christmas, amid reports that Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with Kyiv’s refusal to accept the suggested terms.
What People Are Saying
Trump said Thursday: “I thought that we were very close with Russia to having a deal. I thought we were very close with Ukraine to having a deal. In fact, other than President Zelensky, his people loved the concept of the deal.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said: “The president is extremely frustrated with both sides of this war, and he is sick of meetings just for the sake of meeting.”
What Happens Next
The United States is expected to continue pressing Russia and Ukraine toward a negotiated peace agreement. Whether either side will accept terms in the near future—and whether diplomacy can overcome the core dispute over territory—remains uncertain.
