President Donald Trump has shared what he described as private messages from French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte as he continues to talk about the United States taking “ownership” of Greenland.
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, Trump, 79, posted the alleged Macron message to his Truth Social account, along with a separate note he said came from Rutte, 58.
“My friend, We are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” Macron’s message read, according to Trump’s post.
Macron, 48, also urged cooperation, writing, “Let us try to build great things,” and suggested hosting a G7 meeting in Paris on Thursday, Jan. 22, after the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. He also proposed dinner in Paris that evening before Trump returns to the U.S.
Trump’s post did not include the date the Macron message was sent.
Macron was scheduled to attend the WEF on Tuesday and return to Paris that night, according to Reuters, which reported Élysée Palace aides said he had no plans to extend his stay until Wednesday, Jan. 21 — the day Trump is expected to arrive in Davos.

A source close to Macron told NBC News the messages Trump posted were authentic and said the French president’s position has remained consistent publicly and privately, including on Greenland.
The White House did not immediately comment.
Macron’s appearance in Trump’s posts comes after the French leader said last week that French troops were on the ground in Greenland — an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States.
“France must be available to assess the threat, adapt, and stand alongside a sovereign state to protect its territory,” Macron said in remarks to the military, according to ABC News.
Trump also shared what he described as a private note from Rutte, which opened “Mr. President, dear Donald,” and praised Trump’s “incredible” efforts in Syria. Rutte added he planned to use media appearances in Davos to highlight Trump’s work in Syria, Gaza, and Ukraine.
“I am committed to finding a way forward on Greenland. Can’t wait to see you. Yours, Mark,” Rutte concluded.
A NATO official confirmed the message’s authenticity in an email to the publication that reported it.
In additional posts, Trump circulated what appeared to be AI-generated images depicting the U.S. flag over Greenland and Canada, as well as an image showing him raising a flag beside a sign reading “Greenland US Territory Est. 2026,” alongside JD Vance and Marco Rubio.

Separately, the publication reported that Trump sent a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre asserting the U.S. was aiming for “complete and total control” of Greenland. PBS NewsHour reporter Nick Schifrin first posted a copy of the letter, dated Sunday, Jan. 18, and it was later confirmed by Støre.
The letter included a complaint about not receiving a Nobel Peace Prize and suggested Trump no longer felt obligated to think “purely of Peace,” while still calling peace “predominant.” Støre does not select Nobel Peace Prize winners — the award is decided by a five-member committee appointed by the Norwegian Parliament — and he does not control Greenland’s status.
Trump’s social media activity on Tuesday also followed remarks in which he threatened steep tariffs on French wine and champagne, Reuters reported, amid Macron’s reported reluctance to join a proposed “Board of Peace.”

When asked about that reluctance, Trump responded, “Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he will be out of office very soon,” Reuters quoted him as saying, referring to Macron’s term ending in 2027.
“I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join, but he doesn’t have to join,” Trump added, according to the news agency.
