President Donald Trump has revoked former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection.
According to CNN, NBC News, and Axios, Trump sent a letter dated Thursday, Aug. 28, notifying Harris and her team that her security detail would end on Sept. 1.
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the letter stated, per CNN.
A senior adviser for Harris confirmed the move and said in a statement that she is “grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

While former presidents receive lifelong protection, a 2008 law limits coverage for former vice presidents, their spouses, and children under 16 to just six months after leaving office.
However, a Secret Service official told CNN and NBC News that former President Joe Biden issued an executive memorandum in January — just before leaving office — extending Harris’ protection to 18 months instead of the standard six.
With Trump’s order, federal agents will no longer guard Harris in person, monitor her communications and social media for threats, or protect her Los Angeles residence, CNN reported.
Bob Salladay, spokesperson for California Gov. Gavin Newsom, criticized the decision, telling CNN that “the safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also expressed concern, saying Trump’s order “puts the former Vice President in danger” and pledged to work with Newsom “to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles.”

Trump’s administration has also revoked other protective details this year. In March, the Secret Service security for Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden was rescinded. NBC News further reported that former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas lost his detail, along with several other former intelligence officials.
The revocation comes as Harris prepares for a 15-city book tour across the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Her memoir, 107 Days, begins its tour in New York on Sept. 24 and concludes in Miami this November. The book details the “intense, high-stakes and deeply personal” experience of her 2024 Democratic presidential campaign against Trump, following Biden’s withdrawal from reelection.
