President Donald Trump shared a provocative message on Truth Social following reports that filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead at their home in Brentwood, California, on Dec. 14.

While many in the entertainment world responded with grief and remembrance, Trump’s statement took a sharply different approach. In his post, the 79-year-old president referred to Reiner as “once very talented” and suggested the director’s outspoken criticism of him reflected what Trump called “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME,” sometimes abbreviated as “TDS.” Trump also claimed Reiner’s fixation on him had “driven people CRAZY,” before concluding with a brief condolence: “May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

Reiner, 78, had been a frequent and vocal critic of Trump. Roughly two months earlier, he appeared on MS Now with Ali Velshi and warned that the political environment during Trump’s second term felt “beyond McCarthy era-esque.” In that segment, Reiner argued the country was moving rapidly toward authoritarianism, claiming the administration was pursuing “control of the media” and “military control of the streets.” He urged viewers to “find a way to stop it,” saying the nation was “sliding downhill… in a very, very fast way.”

Emergency responders were called to the home around 3:30 p.m. Sunday for a medical-aid request. When they arrived, they discovered a man and a woman deceased. Sources familiar with the situation identified them as Rob and Michele Reiner and said the couple’s daughter, Romy, found them.

Multiple sources close to the family have alleged that the Reiners’ son, Nick, was responsible for their deaths. Those sources said he was questioned by investigators and later taken into custody. Records reviewed by reporters indicated he was being held on $4 million bail.

Rob and Michele Reiner met while he was directing When Harry Met Sally. They married in 1989 and had three children, including Nick. Nick has previously spoken publicly about long-running addiction struggles that began in his teens and at one point led to homelessness. In a 2016 interview, he said he had returned home and was re-adjusting to life in Los Angeles and around his family.

In a statement obtained by Variety, the Reiner family said they were “heartbroken” and asked for privacy as they grieve what they described as a sudden, devastating loss.
