Kamala Harris is sharing more about her private interactions with Donald Trump.
Her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, which covers her historic 2024 presidential campaign, includes new details about her relationship with the former president. During much of her campaign, Trump publicly criticized and mocked Harris — but according to her, he acted very differently in private.
Harris says she first noticed this change in September 2024. When a man was arrested for allegedly planning to assassinate Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course, Trump publicly blamed Harris’ campaign rhetoric. But shortly after, when Harris called Trump, his tone had shifted.
“I’d readied myself for a phone conversation with Mr. Hyde, but Dr. Jekyll had picked up the call,” Harris writes in her book, which was obtained early by PEOPLE.
On the phone, Trump reportedly praised Harris and said he was grateful to hear from one of the few people who understood his “dangerous” position.
“You’ve done a great job, you really have,” he allegedly said. “My only problem is it makes it very hard for me to be angry with you. It’s like, what am I going to do? How do I say bad things about you now?”
“Well, then don’t!” Harris replied, laughing.

Trump reportedly added, “I’m going to tone it down. I will. You’re going to see.”
At the end of the call, Harris says Trump mentioned his eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, saying she’s a “big fan.” He also sent regards to Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, calling him a “really good guy” and praising his speech at the Democratic National Convention.
Despite Trump’s kind words in private, Harris says her opinion of him didn’t change. She writes that Trump is “a con man,” and “really good at it.”
On the night of the 2024 presidential election, after Trump was projected as the winner, Harris called him again to formally concede. During that call, Trump pronounced her name correctly, after often mispronouncing it during the campaign.
“I am going to be so nice and respectful,” he allegedly said. “You are a tough, smart customer, and I say that with great respect. And you also have a beautiful name. I got use of that name, it’s Kamala.”
107 Days comes out on Sept. 23 and is available for preorder wherever books are sold.
