President Donald Trump issued a pointed warning Sunday to New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist who stunned political observers last week by defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary.
Calling Mamdani a “lunatic” and a “pure communist,” Trump said it would be “inconceivable” for the Queens assemblyman to win the general election—and threatened to withhold federal funding if Mamdani becomes mayor and doesn’t “do the right thing.”
“If he does get in, I’m going to be president,” Trump said in a Fox News interview. “He’s going to have to behave, or they’re not getting any money.”
Why It Matters
Mamdani, who represents parts of Astoria and Ditmars in Queens, identifies as a democratic socialist. He has drawn national attention with a bold progressive platform—free childcare, fare-free buses, and city-run grocery stores—and endorsements from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
His shocking primary win has ignited fierce debate within the Democratic Party, with some seeing his rise as a turning point for progressive politics and others warning of a potential backlash in the general election.
Trump Reacts
In an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures, Trump ripped into Mamdani, saying he had never heard of him before the primary but now considers him a serious threat to the city’s future.
“He’s a communist. A real one,” Trump said. “I thought we’d never see this in America. But here we are.”
Trump didn’t endorse an alternative candidate, despite Republican Curtis Sliwa securing his party’s nomination and Cuomo and Mayor Eric Adams both launching independent bids. Instead, Trump kept the pressure on Mamdani.
“I don’t want to get into that,” Trump said of endorsing. “But whoever’s mayor, they’re going to have to act right—or the federal government will come down hard on them. Financially.”
Controversial Positions Fuel Backlash
Mamdani has already pledged to oppose ICE operations in New York and made headlines last December when he said, if elected, he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited the city—citing violations of international law.
“As mayor, New York City would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu,” Mamdani told journalist Mehdi Hasan. “Our values align with international law—it’s time our actions do too.”
When asked about that remark, Trump responded bluntly:
“He’s a radical-left lunatic.”
Political Fallout and Polarization
Trump’s comments have further inflamed tensions surrounding Mamdani’s rise. On Truth Social, the president declared:
“It’s finally happened. The Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary… He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, and he’s backed by AOC+3—Dummies ALL.”
Meanwhile, Senator Bernie Sanders rallied to Mamdani’s defense, posting:
“Mamdani won. The establishment is panicking. Billionaires are raising money against him, Trump is ranting, Islamophobes are on the loose. They know candidates who stand with the working class can win—not just in NYC, but anywhere.”
What Comes Next
At just 33, Mamdani now finds himself at the center of a political firestorm, with the general election scheduled for November 4, 2025. So far, major Democratic leaders like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer—both from New York—have yet to endorse him.
With multiple independent candidates and a fractured political landscape, the race for City Hall may be one of the most unpredictable in decades.
Whether Mamdani can consolidate progressive energy or fall victim to a bipartisan establishment backlash remains the biggest question heading into November.
