An Alabama family of four has died in what police believe was a murder-suicide.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) posted on Facebook that officers were investigating a “suspected murder-suicide” after four family members, including two children, were found dead from “apparent gunshot wounds” in a home in Daphne on Aug. 14.

Baldwin County Sheriff Anthony Lowery told WALA during a press conference that the sheriff’s office received a “welfare concern” call about the family from another relative who did not live with them.

Officers arrived at the home around 3:30 a.m. local time. After getting no answer at the door and checking the windows, they entered and discovered the bodies.

“It looks like there might have been some type of domestic issue that obviously escalated to this,” Lowery said. “We do believe this is going to be a multiple murder and suicide scene. … It’s as tragic as it comes.”

The sheriff later told WALA that the alleged shooter was Kenneth O’Neil Smith Jr., 44. The victims were identified as Larrica Gaines Smith, 41, Khristian Smith, 15, and Kinsley Smith, 11.

Lowery said the weapon used was a handgun, which was recovered at the scene.

Neighbors held an impromptu vigil in front of the Smith home, according to WKRG. Flowers, stuffed animals, a football, and cards now surround the mailbox.

During the press conference, Lowery said the sheriff’s office informed the schools where the children attended so counselors could support students and staff if needed.

On Aug. 15, the BCSO posted on Facebook, “Our hearts are with the family and friends affected by yesterday’s tragic incident in Daphne. The (BCSO) extends our deepest condolences and stands with you during this incredibly difficult time.”

Police said the investigation is ongoing, and chaplains are available for anyone needing “comfort, guidance and support.” The sheriff’s office also asked people to stay away from the home so they could “work the scene safely and effectively.”

Neighbor Shannon Brannon told WALA that the family was “the nicest, sweetest family.” She added, “Their kids were so sweet. They babysat my daughter. Just good people. … [The mom] just told me they celebrated their wedding anniversary two weeks ago and was happy about it, so I just don’t understand. I don’t understand how this could happen.”
