Governor Kathy Hochul stated that her office is coordinating with officials to provide assistance to everyone affected by the tour bus accident.
Five people died after a tour bus crashed on the New York State Thruway on August 22, Associated Press reported. The bus, returning to New York City from Niagara Falls with 54 passengers, rolled over on the interstate Friday.
The New York State Police said all lanes on I-90 in Pembroke were closed due to the collision involving the bus.
State police Maj. Andre Ray explained at a Friday evening news conference that the driver apparently became distracted, lost control, and overcorrected before the bus veered onto the right shoulder and flipped over shortly before 12:30 p.m. on the eastbound side of Interstate 90, about 40 km east of Buffalo. He did not provide details on what caused the distraction, noting that the investigation is ongoing.
Governor Hochul shared on X that she had been informed of the “tragic tour bus accident.”
The New York State Thruway Authority posted an update stating: “I-90 east and west is closed between exit 48A (Pembroke) and exit 49 (Depew) due to a serious crash.” They urged drivers to seek alternate routes and avoid the area.
Meanwhile, Governor Hochul added that her team is working closely with officials to coordinate rescue efforts and provide help to all those affected.
The New York State Police also updated the public on X, noting: “I-90, Pembroke- All lanes closed due to a collision involving a bus. Expect heavy delays and alternate routes of travel.”
Visuals of the crash began circulating on social media, showing a bus that appeared to have skidded off the road. One post described the scene as a “mass casualty incident,” with a long line of vehicles held up.
