Ellen Hughes, the mother of Quinn and Jack Hughes, described the recent success of Team USA’s men’s and women’s hockey teams at the 2026 Winter Olympics as “surreal.” Both teams earned gold medals, marking a historic moment for U.S. hockey.
In addition to being the parent of three NHL players, Ellen Hughes also serves as a player development coach for Team USA’s women’s hockey team. Following the victories, she addressed the discussion surrounding President Donald Trump’s remarks about inviting the teams to the State of the Union address.
During an appearance on the Today show, Hughes emphasized that the athletes’ primary focus is on representing their country.
“At the end of the day, it’s about the country,” she said.
Hughes explained that both the men’s and women’s teams value unity above all else.
“These players, both the men and women, bring a sense of unity to their teams and to the country,” she stated. “People who may not usually watch hockey came together to support them, regardless of their political views. That’s what truly matters to these athletes.”

She also highlighted the strong bond between the teams, noting the shared experiences and mutual support among players.
“If people could see what we witness from the inside — the camaraderie, the teamwork, and the way the teams support one another — they would understand what this is really about,” Hughes said. “The athletes focus on humanity, unity, and representing their country. Other issues are beyond their control.”
After Team USA’s men’s hockey team secured the gold medal with an overtime victory against Team Canada, President Trump invited the team to attend the State of the Union address and visit the White House during a phone call made from the locker room. During the call, he jokingly mentioned that he would also need to invite the women’s team.
“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team,” Trump said, adding humorously that failing to do so might lead to criticism.
The women’s team, which also won gold at the Olympics, later declined the invitation.
USA Hockey expressed appreciation for the recognition while explaining the decision.
“We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the acknowledgment of their achievement,” a spokesperson said. “However, due to scheduling and previously committed academic and professional responsibilities following the Games, the athletes are unable to attend.”
The spokesperson added that the players were honored to be invited and thankful for the recognition.
