Former NBA player Patrick Beverley allegedly assaulted and threatened the life of his 15-year-old sister before his arrest on Friday, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Fort Bend County, Texas.

The affidavit states that Beverley’s sister told police the incident began after she returned home from visiting her boyfriend. Her mother, Lisa Beverley, allegedly invited the boyfriend inside, and the former NBA guard then scolded his sister for “leaving the residence without permission.”

Beverley, 37, allegedly “grabbed her by her neck with both hands” and “picked her up off the ground,” according to the document. His sister told officers he squeezed her neck, causing pain, and that she felt as though she “was losing oxygen and not able to breathe.”

The affidavit alleges Beverley choked his sister for roughly 20 to 30 seconds, moving her from one room of the house to another “by still holding her neck.”

Once in the other room, he allegedly “began to slam her body against the walls of the residence” while still holding her by the neck. His sister said she tried to break his grip by grabbing his wrists.

According to the affidavit, Beverley then laid his sister on a sofa, “stood on top of her” and punched her “approximately one time on her left eye with a closed fist.”

Beverley’s sister also told investigators that their mother, Lisa, stayed in her bedroom during the alleged assault.

The affidavit further alleges Beverley told his sister during the incident that he would “be the family relative to kill her.”

“I understand that the affidavit contains some negative details; however, remember that it is only one side of the story – given at a time when emotions were high,” Beverley’s attorney, Letitia Quinones-Hollins, said in a statement. “As I’ve said before, we don’t believe that the description in that affidavit is accurate, nor is it complete.”

“Patrick is not a violent man and was not violent that night,” the statement continued. “In fact, he was very respectful with the authorities that night and encouraged others to do the same. He is the provider and protector of his family, including his little sister and his mom. He has always looked out for their wellbeing and will continue to do so. I have every expectation that when all the facts are in, Patrick will be cleared of these charges. Until then, I can only ask that everyone keep an open mind and not rush to judgment. Please remember this is America and in our society, Patrick is innocent unless proven otherwise in a court of law.”

Beverley was taken into custody by the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department on Friday on a charge of allegedly assaulting a family or household member in a manner that impedes breathing or circulation, according to court records. TMZ was first to report the arrest.

He was released later that day on $40,000 bail, the records show.

Following his release, Beverley appeared to respond publicly on X, writing, “Please don’t believe everything you see on the internet. Hope all is well Luv.”

“Patrick Beverley has no criminal record. He cares deeply about his little sister – a young lady, a minor,” Quinones-Hollins said in a statement to TMZ that was also posted on Beverley’s X page. “Given that, when he unexpectedly found her alone in the home with an 18-year-old man in the middle of the night, he was understandably concerned, as any brother would be about his sister. However, we don’t believe what followed happened the way it’s been described and we look forward to the opportunity to address that in court.”
