Four people were killed and 14 others injured in a drive-by shooting outside a private event in Chicago overnight, authorities said Thursday.
The gunfire erupted shortly after midnight in the River North neighborhood, as attendees were leaving an album launch party reportedly held for local rapper Mello Buckzz. According to multiple reports, the rapper’s boyfriend was among those shot.
Chicago police said a black SUV pulled up outside the venue, and at least three individuals inside opened fire on the crowd before fleeing the scene. The suspects remain at large.
Among the 18 people shot were 13 women and five men, ranging in age from 21 to 32. Two women and two men were pronounced dead. Nine victims, including the two deceased women, were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Five others, including the two deceased men, were transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital. The rest were treated at other area hospitals.
At least three victims remain in critical condition, police said.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
Mello Buckzz later issued an emotional statement on social media, saying:
“Feel like everything just weighing down on me. Prayers up for all my sisters. God, please wrap your arms around every last one of them. We need you, I need you… I’m f$#!ed up… All I can do is talk to God and pray.”
Police have not released further details as the investigation continues.
