A man who opened fire near Kentucky’s Blue Grass Airport before driving to a church and fatally shooting two women has been identified as Guy House, according to local authorities and media reports.

The violent spree unfolded late Sunday morning. Police say it began around 11:30 a.m., when House was pulled over by an officer outside the airport after a license plate alert flagged his vehicle. During the stop, House allegedly shot and injured the officer before fleeing the scene.

He then drove roughly 15 miles across town to Richmond Road Baptist Church, where, according to investigators, he had personal connections to people inside. There, the gunman fatally shot 72-year-old Beverly Gumm and 34-year-old Christina Combs, who were mother and daughter. Authorities confirmed both women were related to House — Combs was the sister of the mother of House’s children, and Gumm was her mother.

According to Gumm’s daughter, Star Rutherford, House entered the church and asked for the mother of his children. When told she wasn’t there, he allegedly responded, “Well, someone is gonna have to die then,” before opening fire.

Gumm reportedly tried to take cover but was shot inside the church. House then stepped outside and shot Combs. Two other men were also wounded in the attack — one remains in critical condition, the other is stable. The officer shot earlier near the airport is also reported to be in stable condition, according to CNN and NBC News.

Police quickly responded to the church shooting and fatally shot House at the scene.

Photos from the aftermath showed a heavy police presence at Richmond Road Baptist Church, with officers securing the perimeter.

On Facebook, Rutherford confirmed the deaths of her mother and sister and posted links to fundraisers for both families, writing, “I appreciate the prayers and thoughts.”

Local and state officials expressed sorrow and condemnation following the attack.

“Today, violence invaded the Lord’s House,” said Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman. “The attack on law enforcement and people of faith in Lexington shocked the entire Commonwealth.”

Governor Andy Beshear also issued a statement on social media asking Kentuckians to “please pray for everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence.”

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
