Harrison Ford is sharing his perspective on the current state of American politics in a new interview.
In a piece published Wednesday, July 30, by Variety, the 83-year-old Indiana Jones star reflected on the nation’s political direction following the first six months of President Donald Trump’s second term. “The pendulum doth swing in both directions,” Ford said, adding, “and it’s on a healthy swing to the right at the moment.”
“But, as nature dictates, it will swing back,” he continued. The Shrinking actor noted that the core issue isn’t American identity itself, but rather the deliberate fragmentation of society: “We’re not who we used to be because we’ve been purposefully disaggregated into serviceable political units.”
Ford, a longtime observer of the political landscape, commented on how extreme rhetoric has impacted the nation’s unity. “The middle has become frayed,” he told Variety, “but the middle is where we belong—because compromise is fair and honest.”
Despite the polarization, Ford remains hopeful that Americans will rediscover what binds them together. Pointing to the economic divide, he said, “It’s where it always was: Rich get richer, and poor get poorer. And that ain’t exactly right.”
Ford was a vocal supporter of Trump’s opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris, endorsing her just days before the Nov. 5 election—an election she ultimately lost.
In his endorsement video of Harris, Ford said, “Look, I’ve been voting for 64 years.” Filmed in black and white, the video shows the actor expressing reluctance to speak publicly about politics in the past, but calling on Americans to “move forward” with Harris.
“When dozens of former members of the Trump administration are sounding alarms saying, ‘for God’s sake, don’t do this again,’ you have to pay attention,” Ford said in the video. “They’re telling us something important.”
