Steven Cook disappeared on the Greek island of Crete in 2005 during his first trip abroad without his parents.
Now, 20 years later, police have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of the 20-year-old University of Liverpool student from Sandbach, the BBC reports.
Steven’s brother, Chris Cook, 50, told the BBC that the family learned about the arrest shortly after Sept. 1, which marked the 20th anniversary of Steven’s disappearance.
He said the family isn’t sure what comes next now that someone is finally in custody.
“There might be a legal sense of justice, as in somebody is found innocent or guilty,” Chris told the BBC. “But I don’t think anything can pay back and compensate for everything that’s happened to us as a family and what we’ve been through over the past 20 years.”
In 2005, Steven traveled with friends to the busy resort town of Malia in Crete, according to the Liverpool Echo. On his first night there, he and his friends went bar hopping, the BBC reported.
Police said he was last seen leaving a bar alone and asking for directions back to his hotel, according to The Guardian.
In 2017, workers discovered Steven’s skeletal remains while cleaning the bottom of a well in Malia, The Guardian reported. They also found a disposable camera and a belt in the well, though it’s unclear if those items were linked to his death.
Cheshire Police confirmed it was aware of “developments” in Steven’s case, including that a murder charge had been filed, the BBC reports.
A judge in Greece has sent the case to the Heraklion Jury Trial court, with a hearing scheduled for Oct. 21, according to the BBC.
The Cheshire Constabulary and police in Crete did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
