A Florida man who said his wife had performed “voodoo” on him has been found guilty of murdering her in 2021.
The victim, named only as Catherine in a statement from state attorney Melissa Nelson, was killed on May 20, 2021, in her Jacksonville, Fla., home after arriving with her baby.
Her husband, Samijo Hemans, told police he killed her with a metal pipe, according to Nelson’s statement.
The 33-year-old suffered “severe trauma” to her head and was found dead by Jacksonville police, who were responding to a call about a deceased person, Nelson’s office said.

Hemans told officers that he struck Catherine in the back of her head with a metal pipe as she walked to her bedroom. During the struggle, he said he regained control of the pipe and hit her multiple times.
He also told officers there had been no argument before the attack, claiming he killed her after “several years of her having performed ‘voodoo’ on him,” Nelson’s statement said.
In an obituary shared online after her death, Catherine, identified as Catherine Lee Jackson, was remembered as a loving mom and an athletic trainer who enjoyed creating gifts for her family.
“She was always making and creating something with her God-given talent,” the obituary said. “Her hobbies were art, baking red velvet cakes, reading, crocheting, knitting, and attending live Broadway plays.”
She is survived by her son.
Hemans has been convicted of second-degree murder. His sentencing date has not yet been announced.
