Cayleb Rice, a 16-year-old student-athlete at Wayne County High School in Monticello, Kentucky, tragically died in a single-vehicle accident on Friday, July 25, just weeks before his 17th birthday.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Rice was driving along KY Highway 1275 when his car veered off the road and struck a tree stump. He was ejected from the vehicle upon impact and later pronounced dead from blunt force trauma at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, reported CBS affiliate WKYT.

Wayne County Schools confirmed Rice’s passing in a heartfelt social media post, calling the loss “tragic” and saying his absence has left “an undeniable void in our community.”

Rice was a sophomore and a beloved member of both the school’s football and basketball teams. “Cayleb is one of those guys who did everything he did wholeheartedly,” said Wayne County High School Football Coach Tyler Guffey. “It didn’t matter if it was on the field, on the court, in the classroom or just in life. He was a great kid.”

The school district remembered Rice for his “bright spirit, kind smile, love for sports, tremendous work ethic, and the positive impact he had on those around him.”

The Monticello Police Department also paid tribute to Rice, describing him as “full of promise, kindness, and potential” and mourning the heartbreaking loss felt by the entire community.

Rice would have turned 17 on August 18, according to his obituary. He is survived by his parents and two brothers. The obituary noted his passion for sports and time spent with loved ones: “He enjoyed playing basketball and football and spending time with his family and friends. He also loved working on the farm with his uncles, his Pop, and his cousins. His favorite people to be with were his brothers.”

In the aftermath of the crash, Wayne County High School opened its gymnasium on Saturday, July 26, to allow students and community members to gather and grieve. School officials also confirmed that counseling services will be available in the days ahead to support students and staff during this difficult time.
