A South Oak Cliff High School football player has been charged after a teammate was shot at a Dallas residence just hours after the team’s championship victory.
Dallas police say the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, Dec. 20, at a home in the 6400 block of Knoll Ridge Drive. The injured player was taken to a nearby hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Xavier Mayfield, 18, a safety for South Oak Cliff High School, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Local reports, including Fox 4, said the teammate was shot in the neck following the championship win. Jail records show Mayfield is being held in the Dallas County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
According to CBS Texas, Mayfield told responding officers he was in a second-floor bathroom and preparing to go to his bedroom when the victim — who has not been publicly identified — called his name. Mayfield reportedly said that when he turned, “a single gun shot went off” from the ARIS ABC Rifle he was holding.
Mayfield also told officers he began driving the victim toward the hospital and called 911 before leaving the residence.
On Monday, Dec. 22, the Next Generation Action Network, a civil rights organization in the Dallas area, released a statement claiming the shooting was accidental and that the victim was Mayfield’s teammate, CBS Texas reported.
A request for comment was sent to the organization.
