A high school senior died Thursday afternoon after a pickup truck was struck by a train in North Berwick, Maine.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, near the intersection of Elm Street and Buffum Road, according to NBC affiliate WCSH.

Stephen Peasley, chief of the North Berwick Police Department (NBPD), said a Downeaster train was traveling through the area when it hit the truck, ABC affiliate WMTW reported.

Peasley said the driver — the only person inside the truck — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Noble High School confirmed in a letter that the driver was a senior at the school, according to CBS affiliate WGME. No additional identifying information has been released.

“We were able to identify the person,” Peasley said, per WCSH. “It’s certainly a tough time for the community.”

No one aboard the train, including 147 passengers and crew members, was injured, an Amtrak spokesperson said in a statement.

Crews began removing the truck from the crash site shortly after 6 p.m. local time, according to WMTW. Peasley said the train remained stopped for about three hours following the collision, WGME reported.

The investigation is ongoing. Police said they are still gathering details, including how the truck ended up on the tracks.

“We got a big investigation ahead of us,” Peasley said, WCSH reported.

Amtrak said it “is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.”
