Colorado police say Eduardo Parra-Corral has been charged in connection with a crash that killed 27-year-old Jasmine Faith Carpio. Authorities allege Parra-Corral was driving under the influence and traveling at more than 100 mph when the crash occurred. Prosecutors are now reviewing the matter and weighing vehicular homicide charges.

A spokesperson for the Greeley Police Department said the investigation remains focused on the facts of the case and the loss of life.

“The accident resulted in the tragic loss of a member of our community, Jasmine Carpio. While we will not be making any statements on the immigration status of Mr. Parra-Corral, we remain fully committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation.”

The Department of Homeland Security offered a different emphasis. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Parra-Corral, whom she described as “a criminal illegal alien from Mexico,” was arrested on November 9 after allegedly running a red light while driving under the influence at speeds above 100 mph. She said ICE took him into custody on November 10, and that he was deported on November 25.

McLaughlin added that Parra-Corral “no longer poses a threat to Americans,” while state prosecutors are reportedly reviewing whether the case can continue after his removal from the country.

The incident has also fueled a broader political dispute in Colorado over how closely local law enforcement should coordinate with ICE.

Douglas County District Attorney George Brauchler criticized Colorado’s sanctuary laws, arguing they can make it harder to identify and detain people he considers a public safety threat.

“This is a horrific situation, but one we’ve seen play out across Colorado and across the United States.”

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) also weighed in, blaming Democratic immigration policies for Carpio’s death and referring to Parra-Corral as a “criminal alien.”

The Colorado GOP questioned state immigration enforcement and its implications for public safety. Boebert wrote:

“Colorado’s sanctuary policies welcomed this criminal alien into our state. Democrats are responsible for the death of a 27-year-old woman by allowing her killer illegally into our country.”
