Hillary Clinton has stated that she would “honestly” support nominating President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize—if he succeeds in ending the Russia-Ukraine war on terms that protect Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

The former Secretary of State made the remarks during Friday’s episode of the Raging Moderates podcast, hosted by Jessica Tarlov. Clinton, 77, emphasized that her support would hinge on Trump preventing Russian President Vladimir Putin from seizing Ukrainian land and standing firm against Moscow’s aggression.

“Honestly, if he could bring about the end to this terrible war without forcing Ukraine to surrender its territory to the aggressor—if he could truly stand up to Putin, something we haven’t seen so far but perhaps this is the moment—then yes, I’d nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize,” Clinton said.

She added, “My goal here is to prevent capitulation to Putin.” Clinton’s comments came as President Trump traveled to Alaska for a high-stakes meeting with Putin, scheduled for 11 a.m. local time (1900 GMT) at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a Cold War-era military installation in Anchorage.

Speaking aboard Air Force One en route to the meeting, Trump told reporters he would allow Ukraine to decide whether to make territorial concessions to Russia. He characterized Putin as “a smart guy” with whom he shares mutual respect, adding, “I think something’s going to come of it.”
