A man asked Reddit for advice after a private habit—sleeping naked in his own bedroom—turned into a full-blown dispute with his roommate following an overnight visit from the roommate’s girlfriend.
Writing from a throwaway account, he said he’s slept without clothes for years. He overheats easily and described it as simply more comfortable. He emphasized that it has never affected any shared spaces: he’s always dressed when he leaves his room, or at least throws on shorts if he’s heading to or from the shower.
He also noted that his roommate has long known about the routine and never objected. They typically respect each other’s privacy, and he said they “always knock on each others doors anyway to be polite.”
The situation changed when the roommate’s girlfriend stayed over for the first time. After a night out drinking, the three returned home late and went straight to bed. The man said he followed his usual routine and fell asleep.
Sometime during the night, the girlfriend got up to use the bathroom but reportedly got turned around. The man explained his bedroom is next to the bathroom, and she accidentally opened his door instead. Half asleep, he recalled the door opening and closing but didn’t think anything of it, writing that once she shut it, he went right back to sleep.

By morning, he said, the atmosphere had shifted. The roommate and girlfriend were upset, claiming she “saw everything” and felt uncomfortable knowing he slept naked while guests were in the apartment. According to the post, they told him he needed to start wearing clothes to bed because she would likely be staying over more often.
He refused, arguing that he was in his own room and that the situation happened because she walked into the wrong bedroom. In his view, it was “still her fault that she walked in on me sleeping.”
Days later, he said, the conflict only escalated. He claimed his roommate had entered his room again—this time intentionally—“just to see if I was naked or not.”
“This is getting really out of hand,” he wrote, adding that he didn’t believe he should be forced to change how he sleeps in a private space to accommodate a guest’s discomfort.
He also addressed repeated suggestions to lock his door, explaining that rental rules don’t allow modifications. Still, he said he was exploring non-damaging ways to keep the door from being opened.
In the comments, many users backed him, arguing that guests don’t get to set rules for how someone behaves in their own bedroom. Others focused on what they saw as the bigger red flag: the roommate entering his room without permission. One commenter also raised a separate concern—if the girlfriend would be staying over frequently, would that affect rent, utilities, or household expectations.
