Federal agents were involved in a shooting that injured two people in Portland, Ore., on Thursday, Jan. 8, according to local police.

The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) said officers responded at 2:18 p.m. local time after receiving reports that a man and a woman had suffered “apparent gunshot wounds,” according to a PPB news release.

A few minutes later, at 2:24 p.m., the man who had been shot called for help. When officers arrived, they located both injured individuals, applied a tourniquet and coordinated with emergency medical personnel, PPB said.

Police said they confirmed “federal agents had been involved in a shooting,” adding that local officers “were not involved in the incident.”

Both victims were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available. The FBI also responded to the scene, ABC News reported, citing sources.

After a City Council meeting, District 1 Councilor Jamie Dunphy said the wounded people are husband and wife, according to The Register-Guard. A source also told CNN the two were husband and wife.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that agents approached a vehicle and identified themselves, then alleged the driver attempted to use the vehicle to run them over.

“Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired defensive shots,” the spokesperson said. The statement added that the driver then left the area with the passenger. The agency said more information would be released as the situation develops.

In the same statement, DHS also claimed the passenger “in the vehicle and target is a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and involved in a recent shooting in Portland.” That assertion has not been independently verified.

Investigation underway

An investigation is ongoing, and the city is “still in the early stages of this incident,” Portland Police Chief Bob Day said.

Day also said PPB is responsible for public safety and enforcing state laws, but “does not engage in immigration enforcement as outlined in PPB Directive 810.10.”

“We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more,” Day said.

During a press conference, Day said he did not know the identities or medical conditions of those who were shot and that he has been in communication with the FBI, CNN reported.

Context: Minneapolis shooting and protests

The Portland shooting came one day after the death of Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by ICE officer Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis, the Minnesota Star Tribune, Fox9 and The Intercept reported. The 37-year-old mother’s death was captured on multiple bystander videos.

On Wednesday, Jan. 7, Good was seen reversing her Honda Pilot as ICE agents attempted to open her car door, then moving forward and to the right when the agent opened fire—first through the windshield and then twice through the open window—killing her.

Video also shows the masked agent walking to the crash site, then leaving the area in an SUV.

Following Good’s death, large-scale protests against ICE took place across the Twin Cities on Wednesday and Thursday.
