A man tragically died after his wife accidentally fell on top of him in a freak accident.
The 59-year-old man, who was described as small in build, was reportedly smothered after his 220-pound wife lost her balance and fell out of bed, pressing him against the wall.
The incident happened in Campanha, near Porto, Portugal. Neighbors were alerted by the woman’s screams early Monday morning and rushed to help. She had become trapped between the bed and the wall and couldn’t get up because of her weight. It took five men to lift her off her husband.
By the time firefighters and paramedics arrived, the man was already unconscious. Emergency workers tried to revive him after he went into cardiac arrest, but sadly, he could not be saved.
Portuguese police investigated the case and confirmed it was a tragic accident. They ruled out any foul play. A source close to the investigation said, “It’s been categorized as accidental asphyxia. There was no criminal intent. She stumbled while getting out of bed, and that led to what happened.”
The woman has been offered grief counseling. The couple had lived together for several years but were not formally married.
