A man recorded a tense phone call as his wife was detained by federal immigration agents in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

NBC6 Miami obtained footage from Noah Lazega, who said his wife, Nicolth Hernandez-Lucero, 24, was driving home Wednesday night when agents stopped her near St. Ambrose Episcopal Church. Hernandez-Lucero called Lazega immediately, and he began recording the conversation.

Lazega said agents told his wife they were “in the area running plates,” and did not answer when she asked what probable cause they had for the stop.

“So you’re going to come with us tonight,” an agent told Hernandez-Lucero in the recording, according to NBC6.

“Is there a reason that I got stopped?” she asked, before adding, “Am I gonna be detained?”

“Yeah,” the agent responded.

Lazega told NBC6 he was “in shock” as he listened on the phone.

“I can’t believe what’s happening,” he said.

Hernandez-Lucero, a surgical technician at a local hospital, is originally from Colombia and has lived in the United States since she was 15, Lazega said. The couple has been together for nearly four years and married in December 2025. Lazega, a U.S. citizen, said he had started the process of helping his wife adjust her immigration status.

“She’s a kind, compassionate person, selfless,” Lazega said. “She helps people, saves people. She has a whole community behind her right now, rooting for her.”

Her attorney, Justin Gould, told NBC6 that Hernandez-Lucero entered the U.S. legally and has been going through the asylum application process with her family.

“This is a person who entered legally, who filed a case legally as a dependent through her parents and has been in this country with no criminal record,” Gould told the outlet, criticizing the immigration system.

“So now it is basically everybody’s illegal unless otherwise noted, and it’s just not OK,” he added. “This is not what the president promised.”

During Lazega’s interview with NBC6, he spoke with Hernandez-Lucero by phone from a Florida detention center, and the couple exchanged “I love you” before ending the call.

Lazega said he shared the recording to draw attention to what he described as the challenges of the immigration system.

“I hope we can get her out, get her help, raise awareness for other people who are going through this right now,” he said. “They don’t deserve this. Nobody deserves this.”

Hernandez-Lucero is being held at a detention facility in Pompano Beach and is awaiting a judge to set her first court date after her attorney filed for a bond hearing. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
