WASHINGTON — Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a defiant opening statement before the House Oversight Committee on Thursday, vehemently denying any connection to Jeffrey Epstein while urging lawmakers to redirect their investigation toward other high-profile figures, specifically Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
The testimony, which Clinton dismissed as “partisan political theater,” marks a high-stakes escalation in the committee’s ongoing probe into the trafficking operation run by Epstein, the well-connected financier who died in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019.
Clinton Denies Ties, Blasts Committee Focus
In a sharp-edged, four-page opening statement, Clinton sought to distance herself entirely from the disgraced financier. Addressing the committee, she emphasized that she had no personal or professional relationship with Epstein.
“I do not recall ever encountering Mr. Epstein,” Clinton stated. “I never flew on his plane or visited his island, homes, or offices.”
The former First Lady went on to accuse the committee of neglecting the systemic failures that allowed Epstein to evade justice following his initial 2008 conviction. She argued that the current inquiry was designed to protect “powerful men and political allies” rather than securing justice for the victims of human trafficking.
The Musk Connection: Emails Under Scrutiny
The most calculated moment of Clinton’s testimony came when she leveled a thinly veiled demand for the committee to subpoena Elon Musk.
“A committee endeavoring to stop human trafficking… would subpoena anyone who asked on which night there would be the ‘wildest party’ on Epstein Island,” Clinton said.
This remark refers to internal Department of Justice (DOJ) documents released on January 30. The files contain a 2012 email exchange in which Musk asked Epstein, “What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?” The query followed an offer from Epstein to provide helicopter transport for Musk and his then-partner, Talulah Riley.
Key Details from DOJ Files:
The Request: Musk requested two seats on a helicopter to Epstein’s private Caribbean island in November 2012.
The Defense: Musk has publicly denied ever visiting the island.
The Findings: To date, DOJ files have produced no evidence suggesting Musk had knowledge of or participated in Epstein’s criminal activities.
Bill Clinton and the Weekend Ahead
The committee’s focus on the Clinton family remains intense due to former President Bill Clinton’s documented history with Epstein. DOJ files include numerous photographs of the former president with Epstein, and flight logs confirm he traveled on Epstein’s private jet at least four times in 2002 and 2003 during trips related to the Clinton Foundation.
Hillary Clinton also addressed her past acquaintance with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s accomplice currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. While acknowledging they had met, Clinton maintained she had no knowledge of Maxwell’s crimes.
“The committee justified its subpoena to me based on its assumptions that I have information,” Clinton said. “Let me be as clear as I can. I do not.”
What’s Next
The investigation moves to Chappaqua, New York, on Friday, where House Oversight Committee members are scheduled to depose former President Bill Clinton. The testimony is expected to focus on the frequency of his contact with Epstein following the financier’s 2008 conviction and the nature of Epstein’s donations to global charitable initiatives.
