A man on Reddit is questioning whether he went too far after a tense family dinner turned into an emotional scene.
In a post on the “Am I the A——” subreddit, he shared that his wife has been feeling insecure about some recent weight gain. “I think she’s gorgeous, but she’s insecure about how she looks now,” he wrote.
Recently, the couple hosted the man’s parents for dinner at their home. His parents had just moved into a house about an hour away, but what was meant to be a pleasant evening quickly fell apart.
“My parents arrived early, and my wife hadn’t changed out of her cooking clothes. She was wearing this tight T-shirt,” he recalled.
Then, things escalated when his mom crossed a boundary.
“My mom grabbed my wife’s belly and asked if she was pregnant,” he explained. “My wife said no, that she’s just getting fat. I didn’t want a massive argument, so I rushed my parents out — basically telling them we had to reschedule, congratulated them on the new house, and said we’d save them some food. I then comforted my wife as she started to cry.”

Days later, the man followed up with his parents to discuss what happened.
“My mom said she had made a mistake, but I had taken it too far by asking them to leave,” he wrote. “My dad said that by not letting my mom apologize that day, I made them seem like jerks to my wife. I told my parents my mom can apologize now, but they said that at this point it’ll just look like I forced them to.”
Feeling conflicted, he turned to Reddit for advice, asking, “Am I overreacting?”
Since sharing his story, commenters have overwhelmingly sided with him.
“Honestly, it’s just nice to see somebody actually supporting their partner on this website. I think you’re in the clear,” one user said.
“I’m team husband all the way on this one. And for what it’s worth, the parents could have called to apologize at any time. They don’t get to try turning it around to make themselves the victims,” another person wrote.
A third commenter added, “It’s frustrating when people deflect like that. Staying firm is the only way to protect yourself.”
