An Indiana judge and his wife are recovering after they were shot at their home in broad daylight, authorities said.

On Sunday, Jan. 18, at about 2:17 p.m. local time, the Lafayette Police Department responded to a reported shooting in the 1700 block of Mill Pond Lane, according to a news release posted on Facebook Monday, Jan. 19.

Officers found that two adults had been injured. Police identified the victims as Steven and Kimberly Meyer.

“Mr. Meyer sustained an injury to his arm, and Mrs. Meyer sustained an injury to her hip,” police said, adding that shell casings were recovered at the scene. Both were treated and are in stable condition.

Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush later identified the victims as Tippecanoe Superior Court 2 Judge Steve Meyer and his wife, Kim, in a statement posted to the Indiana Judicial Branch website.

Writing to colleagues, Rush said Meyer is “a fellow judge and a longtime friend,” adding, “I am deeply grateful he and his wife Kim are alive after having been shot in their home. Their health and well-being are of utmost concern to me.”

Rush also warned that, as of her message, the shooter was “purportedly still at large,” urging judges to stay in contact with their local sheriff.

“I worry about the safety of all our judges,” Rush wrote, calling violence against a judge or a judge’s family “completely unacceptable.” She ended by asking others to keep the couple in their prayers and to remain vigilant about their own security.

In a statement included in the police release, Kimberley Meyer said she and her husband have “great confidence” in the Lafayette Police Department’s investigation and thanked all agencies involved.

“We are also incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from the community; everyone has been so kind and compassionate,” she said, also thanking medical personnel who provided care after the shooting.

Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski also shared a statement through the news release, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Meyer family.”

“I want to ensure the community that every available resource is being used to apprehend the individual(s) responsible for this senseless, unacceptable act of violence,” Roswarski said, adding that he has “tremendous confidence” in the police department and thanking local, state, and federal agencies assisting in the case.

No arrests have been announced.

Police said Monday the case “remains an active and ongoing joint investigation” involving the Lafayette Police Department, Indiana State Police, Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, West Lafayette Police Department, Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office, and the FBI.

Tippecanoe Superior Court 2 Judge Steve Meyer was first elected in 2014, according to ABC News, after previously serving as a public defender for Tippecanoe County and on the Lafayette City Council.

Local station WLFI News 18 reported last month that Meyer would not seek a third term.

In a separate statement shared by the Indiana Judicial Branch on Monday, Tippecanoe County judges said, “First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with Judge Meyer and his wife, Kim.”

“Judge Meyer remains in a hospital in stable condition,” the statement said, adding that court leadership had already coordinated coverage for Tippecanoe Superior Court No. 2. The judges also said they have received an “overwhelming outpouring of support” from colleagues across the state and emphasized that cases in the court “will continue to be heard in a timely manner.”
