James Van Der Beek was surrounded by loved ones in his final days.

His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, announced that he died at age 48 on Feb. 11. In an Instagram post, she wrote that he “met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.” The actor had revealed in 2024 that he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer the year before.

After news of his death spread, friends and members of his inner circle shared that they were able to spend time with him shortly before he passed.

Alfonso Ribeiro commented on Kimberly’s post that he felt “lucky” he was able to be there to say goodbye. In a separate tribute on Instagram, Ribeiro said he was “so broken” and described Van Der Beek as a close friend and guiding presence in his life.

Ribeiro wrote that he had been with Van Der Beek throughout his battle with cancer, from hopeful stretches when it seemed he might overcome it to the difficult moments when it returned. He added that both Van Der Beek and his wife had changed his life, and said he planned to continue supporting their family, including the couple’s children.

Actor Mehcad Brooks also shared that he spent time with Van Der Beek in his final days. In comments and a video posted to Instagram, Brooks said he was by his side for the last several days—holding his hand, praying with him, telling jokes, singing, and offering comfort. He described it as one of the greatest honors of his life.

Stacy Keibler wrote that being with Van Der Beek near the end felt like a profound gift. She reflected on how the experience brought a deep sense of presence—setting aside distractions to simply sit, listen, hold hands, and watch the sky change at sunset. Keibler said their conversations touched on faith, the strangeness of the world, and the idea that his spirit might be needed elsewhere. She also recalled a shooting star appearing as the sun went down, which she took as a meaningful reminder that nothing was random.

She described him as a gift, a devoted husband, and an extraordinary father to the six children he shared with Kimberly, adding that it was an honor to stand beside his family in what she called sacred moments.

Designer Erin Fetherston also said she visited Van Der Beek during his final days. In a post, she wrote that it was an honor to call him a best friend, and said that while the space he leaves cannot be filled, those who loved him would do their best to surround his family with care and to carry forward the joy he valued.
