James Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their six children are facing what friends describe as an “uncertain future” following the actor’s death.
A GoFundMe created by Kimberly’s friends says the family has run out of money and is struggling to remain in their home after Van Der Beek died on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
“In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds,” the fundraiser’s description states.
The post adds that the family is trying to keep their home and maintain stability for the children, including continuing their education. The fundraising page says donations will help cover essential living expenses, bills, and educational support.
“Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives,” the post reads, thanking supporters for considering a contribution.
Van Der Beek and Kimberly share six children: daughters Olivia, 15, Annabel, 12, Emilia, 9½, and Gwendolyn, 7, and sons Joshua, 13, and Jeremiah, 4.
According to the report, Van Der Beek died due to complications of stage 3 colorectal cancer. Kimberly announced the news on Instagram, writing that he “passed peacefully” and that he faced his final days “with courage, faith, and grace.” She also asked for privacy as the family grieves.
The actor was first diagnosed in August 2023 and publicly shared the diagnosis in November 2024. “I have colorectal cancer,” he said at the time, adding that he had been handling it privately while taking steps to address it with the support of his family. He also said he felt optimistic and was “feeling good.”
In a previous interview, Van Der Beek described life with six children as “humbling,” noting that parenting can quickly shift into “hectic” moments that require adults to manage their own emotions. He also said one of his biggest joys was watching how his children care for one another, especially when they look after their youngest sibling.
