Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance were met with an unexpectedly hostile reception when they appeared on the big screen during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Milan.

As athletes from each participating nation entered the stadium, the atmosphere was celebratory. Teams were greeted with loud applause, including the U.S. delegation, which received enthusiastic cheers from the crowd. But the tone shifted abruptly when cameras briefly cut to the vice president and the second lady seated in the stands.

According to Unilad, the reaction was immediate and unmistakable: loud booing, hissing, and jeering echoed through the venue. The moment appeared to catch broadcasters off guard. One commentator, audibly surprised, remarked, “Uh… those are a lot of boos for him. Whistling, jeering, some applause. Not a long shot of him and his wife…”

Politics spilling onto the Olympic stage

The episode underscored how domestic political sentiment can surface even during global, nonpartisan events. Ahead of the ceremony, International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry had described the opening as an opportunity for unity and respect — an ideal that, in this instance, did not extend to the U.S. vice president.

On social media, viewers were quick to point out that the reaction appeared directed solely at Vance, not at the American athletes. One commenter described the moment as “a reminder of how domestic politics can spill onto the world stage, and how public perception abroad can differ drastically from at home.” Another said the boos amounted to a blunt international rebuke of the Trump administration.

Despite the brief disruption, the rest of the ceremony unfolded as planned, filled with cheers and celebration. Host nation Italy drew some of the loudest applause of the night, and the focus quickly returned to the athletes and pageantry of the Games.

Personal news amid public scrutiny

Away from the Olympic spotlight, Vance and his wife recently shared happier news. On January 20, 2026, the couple announced that they are expecting their fourth child, a baby boy due in late July. The announcement was shared on Instagram, noting that Usha and the baby are healthy.

The couple already has three children — Ewan, 8; Vivek, 5; and Mirabel, 4. The pregnancy marks a historic first: Usha Vance is the first second lady in U.S. history to be pregnant while her husband is in office, and the youngest woman to serve in the role in more than 75 years.

In their statement, the couple said they were “very excited” to welcome their new son later this summer — a reminder that even as public figures face sharp reactions on the world stage, their private lives continue beyond the noise.
