Jenna Bush Hager understands what Ashley Hicks is going through when it comes to having a strict childhood.

Ashley Hicks recently became popular on TikTok by sharing stories about growing up as the daughter of a Secret Service agent. She talked about things like her dad’s safety tips — such as never sitting with your back to the door in a restaurant — and how she couldn’t do normal kid things because of her dad’s serious training.

In one video, Ashley shared a story about coming home one night as a teenager. She was home before curfew but had been drinking. Her dad asked her from across the room, “Do you really think that gum is going to hide what you’ve been doing?”

“It just felt like that was normal growing up,” Ashley told PEOPLE in an interview about her TikTok fame.

On Monday’s Today show, Jenna Bush Hager reacted to Ashley’s stories with a joke, saying, “Ashley, I couldn’t get away with much either because I was always followed by men carrying fanny packs hiding things.”

Jenna Bush Hager is the daughter of former President George W. Bush. She turned 19 just after the 2000 election and had a hard time growing up in the public eye during her dad’s eight years as president. Jenna and her twin sister Barbara often faced criticism, including for partying while they were in college.

Today show host Craig Melvin teased Jenna, saying, “I remember reading articles years ago about you getting away with quite a bit.”

But Jenna reminded him that both she and her sister did face some minor legal trouble. “I was arrested! There’s even a mugshot proving I didn’t get away with it.”

In April 2001, while at the University of Texas, Jenna was charged with a misdemeanor for having alcohol underage. A month later, she was charged again for trying to use a fake ID. She pleaded no contest to both charges.

Besides their similar strict childhoods, Jenna Bush Hager and Ashley Hicks also share something touching.

People often ask Ashley if her dad — who worked as a Secret Service agent for 25 years under several presidents — had a favorite president.

Ashley said that while all presidents treat Secret Service agents well, “I think he would say President George W. Bush, because he spent the longest time as his special agent.”
