Joseph Duggar, a former star of the TLC reality franchise 19 Kids and Counting, was arrested Wednesday on felony charges involving the alleged sexual abuse of a minor. The charges stem from an investigation into a 2020 incident reported to have occurred during a family vacation in Florida.

Duggar, 31, was taken into custody by the Tontitown Police Department on March 18 at approximately 3:59 p.m. local time. He is currently being held at the Washington County Detention Center in Arkansas, where he awaits extradition to Bay County, Florida, to face formal prosecution.

Specific Allegations and Charges

According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Duggar faces two felony counts:

  • Lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 12 years of age.
  • Lewd and lascivious conduct by a person 18 years or older.

The BCSO detailed a series of incidents in 2020 while the Duggar family and the victim’s family were vacationing in Panama City Beach. Investigators allege that Duggar repeatedly asked the then-9-year-old girl to sit on his lap.

The abuse reportedly escalated during the trip. “As the vacation continued, he also asked her to sit next to him on a couch and covered them with a blanket,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. Authorities allege that during these moments, Duggar manipulated the victim’s clothing and touched her genitals.

The Investigation and Confession

The case came to light in March 2026 after the victim, now 14, participated in a forensic interview regarding past abuse. Following the disclosure, the victim’s father reportedly confronted Duggar on March 17.

Law enforcement officials stated that Duggar admitted to the actions during the confrontation with the father and subsequently to Tontitown detectives. According to the BCSO, the victim noted that Duggar had apologized for his actions at the time of the 2020 vacation, after which the incidents stopped.

“The Tontitown Police Department is aware of a reported incident that may cause concern within our community,” Arkansas officials said in a statement. “This incident did not occur in Tontitown. Our officers assisted the victim, the family, and the agency with jurisdiction over the case.”

Joseph Duggar’s arrest marks the second high-profile criminal case involving a son of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar. The family’s original reality series was canceled in 2015 following revelations that the eldest son, Josh Duggar, had molested several young girls—including some of his own sisters—years prior.

Josh Duggar, 38, is currently serving a 151-month federal prison sentence at FCI Seagoville in Texas. He was convicted in December 2021 on charges of receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material. His anticipated release date is August 2032.

Joseph Duggar is scheduled for a court appearance on March 20, 2026. Legal experts note that since the alleged crimes occurred in Florida, he must be extradited from Arkansas to the Bay County jurisdiction.

Under Florida law, lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12 is a first-degree felony, which carries a potential sentence of up to life in prison, with mandatory minimum terms depending on the specifics of the conviction.

The Duggar family has not yet released an official statement regarding the arrest.
