Judge Frank Caprio, the widely admired Rhode Island judge who gained nationwide fame as a social media sensation, has passed away at the age of 88. Just hours before his death, he shared a heartfelt video on Instagram, thanking his followers for their support.
In the clip, Caprio told his supporters, “Unfortunately I’ve had a setback, I’m back in the hospital now and I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more,” referencing his ongoing fight with pancreatic cancer.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement:
“Judge Frank Caprio passed away peacefully at the age of 88 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. His legacy lives on in the countless acts of kindness he inspired. Cause of Death
The Caprio family shared that the 88-year-old died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Caprio first revealed his diagnosis in November 2023 in an emotional Facebook video. Despite receiving a grim prognosis, he underwent six months of chemotherapy and five rounds of radiation.
In May 2024, he marked a milestone by completing his final radiation treatment, ringing the “bell of healing” at the Miami Cancer Institute. The moment was met with a standing ovation from loved ones and medical staff, symbolizing his enduring optimism and strength.
