Rumors of a budding romance between Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry are circulating after the two were spotted together in Montréal on multiple occasions, and a source close to the situation tells PEOPLE that there’s a definite spark.
A Canadian source says both are navigating life after major breakups—Perry following her recent split from Orlando Bloom, and Trudeau after separating from wife Sophie Grégoire in 2023—adding that they appear to share a mutual attraction.
“They’re interested in each other, but it’s still very early,” the source notes. “Katy’s on tour around the globe, and Justin is redefining his life post-politics. Still, there’s chemistry. They have a lot in common.”
One of those common threads is music, the source adds, along with a shared sense of optimism. “They’re both idealists who still believe in the power of positive change, even if it feels harder to achieve these days.”
Trudeau, 53, and Grégoire were married for 18 years and share three teenage children. Perry, 40, confirmed her engagement to Bloom had ended in early July; the couple share a daughter, Daisy, born in 2020.
“Their personal lives will probably slow things down, but they can still see each other and co-parent effectively,” the source continues. “They each have an ex-partner, so responsibilities are divided. Long-distance relationships aren’t easy, but for them, it’s possible.”
On Monday, the pair were seen walking a dog together through Montréal’s Mount Royal Park before heading to dinner at local favorite Le Violon. While there, they met with Chef Danny Smiles and even visited the kitchen post-meal to thank the staff. According to TMZ, the two enjoyed cocktails and shared several dishes—though no public displays of affection were observed.
Another Canadian source tells PEOPLE that discretion is second nature for Trudeau. “He’s a politician who’s long accustomed to keeping his personal life private. He wouldn’t make a public move this early. He knows eyes are on him and he’s playing it smart.”
Still, the timing may be right. “There’s something there, even if it’s very early days,” the source adds.
On Wednesday, July 30, Trudeau was again seen supporting Perry—this time in the crowd at her sold-out Lifetimes Tour concert at Montréal’s Bell Centre. Dressed in a casual black T-shirt, he was reportedly smiling and singing along to several of her hits.
