DHS Secretary defends controversial site, vows transparency amid accusations of inhumane treatment
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem pushed back against growing criticism of the new Alligator Alcatraz migrant detention facility during a tense interview on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday, defending its standards and accusing Democrats of politicizing the issue.
Located in the Florida Everglades, the controversial facility currently holds about 900 detainees, though it has the capacity to house nearly 4,000. Democrats who toured the site over the weekend, including Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), described the conditions as overcrowded, unsanitary, and inhumane—likening it to an “internment camp.”
“More than 30 people stuffed into a jail cell?” host Kristen Welker asked sharply.
“I wish they would have said that back during the Biden administration,” Noem responded. “When people were packed on top of each other on cement floors and couldn’t even move. But Democrats were silent then, and that’s why this kind of political hypocrisy has to stop.”
Wasserman Schultz and other lawmakers alleged detainees were forced to share drinking water with bathroom facilities and were confined to “wall-to-wall cages” in stifling heat.
Noem Defends Conditions, Pledges Transparency
Secretary Noem rejected the characterization, insisting the facility meets or exceeds federal standards and is being managed responsibly by state authorities.
“Our federal detention centers are held to higher standards than most state or local centers and even some federal prisons,” Noem said. “Alligator Alcatraz is state-run, but the standards remain high.”
Pressed further by Welker—who repeatedly interrupted Noem to challenge her responses—the secretary vowed to open the facility to media cameras, saying it would prove the Trump administration’s operations are more humane than what was seen under President Biden.
“I wouldn’t call them jail cells. They are secure, federally compliant facilities,” Noem said before being cut off again.
Noem, Trump Allies Accuse Democrats of Hypocrisy
Noem argued that critics ignored similar or worse conditions under the Biden administration and said Democrats have only taken issue with detention conditions now that former President Trump is back in office.
“They never spoke up when migrant families were sleeping on concrete under Biden, or when children were packed into fenced areas in border patrol parking lots,” she said.
Tom Homan, former Trump Border Czar, echoed Noem’s sentiments on CNN’s State of the Union, accusing Democrats of selective outrage and neglecting broader immigration issues.
“Under Biden, there were historic numbers of migrant deaths, women and children trafficked, and fentanyl pouring into communities,” Homan said. “But we didn’t hear this level of outrage then.”
Trump’s Immigration Policies Face Legal Hurdles
The White House continues to face court battles over its immigration policies, with several federal judges issuing temporary injunctions against aspects of ICE operations in places like Southern California.
Noem dismissed those rulings as “ridiculous” and said the administration would appeal aggressively to maintain enforcement priorities.
“Our operations are based on facts, targeting criminals and those who have violated immigration laws,” she said.
The Biden administration has not publicly responded to Noem’s invitation for a side-by-side comparison of detention conditions between the two administrations.
