Lindsay Clancy was prescribed at least nine medications in the months before prosecutors say she strangled her three children and then attempted to take her own life, according to a new wrongful death lawsuit filed by her husband, Patrick Clancy.

In the complaint, Patrick alleges that eight of those medications were prescribed in a span of just three weeks — between Nov. 16, 2022, and Dec. 5, 2022. He filed the lawsuit against several of his wife’s healthcare providers on behalf of the estates of the couple’s three children: Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and 8-month-old Callan.

Patrick writes that Lindsay’s condition worsened over time, citing medical records to argue that she allegedly killed the children after she “started hearing a compelling and unrecognizable singular male voice” that told her “this is your last chance” and that she had to “take them with [her].” The same voice, the filing claims, also “indicated to [Lindsay] that she should die,” and warned that her children would suffer if she was gone.

According to the complaint, Lindsay struggled with returning to work after the births of the couple’s first two children. Patrick claims things became significantly worse after the birth of Callan, prompting Lindsay to seek psychiatric care.

The filing says a psychiatrist prescribed her sertraline (Zoloft). Patrick alleges Lindsay did not take it for about a month, and when she did, she reported feeling “awful” and began experiencing insomnia. He claims the medication also intensified her anxiety, and after a month of little to no sleep, she went to the emergency room, where she was prescribed trazodone.

Over the following three weeks, the lawsuit alleges Lindsay was also prescribed: fluoxetine (Prozac), zolpidem tartrate (Ambien), mirtazapine (Remeron), clonazepam (Klonopin), quetiapine fumarate (Seroquel), diazepam (Valium), and lamotrigine (Lamictal).

Patrick accuses the providers of prescribing a “bevy of diverse and powerful medications” without appropriately monitoring Lindsay’s reactions and symptoms. “If Defendants had not acted negligently, and rather had provided adequate care, it is more likely than not that Patrick and Lindsay’s children would still be alive today,” the complaint states.

One of the defendants named in the lawsuit is South Shore Health. The organization responded in a statement saying it “cares deeply about and prioritizes the safety of our patients and their families and always strives to provide excellent care,” adding that because the matter is in litigation, it could not comment on the specific allegations.

Lindsay is scheduled to go on trial in July, and her defense team has said they intend to pursue an insanity defense, arguing she was experiencing postpartum psychosis.

Prosecutors allege that on Jan. 24, 2023, Lindsay asked Patrick to go pick up dinner. Patrick returned home about 25 minutes later, according to the account provided, and discovered Lindsay had jumped from a second-story bedroom window. While speaking with emergency operators, he found the couple’s three children strangled with exercise bands tied around their necks.

Cora and Dawson were pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Callan died a few days later.

Patrick has publicly said he forgives his wife and has urged others to do the same. Prosecutors, meanwhile, argue Lindsay planned the killings and sent Patrick out of the house to carry them out.

Her trial is currently set to begin on July 20.
