Lizzo is opening up about the emotional and physical shifts she’s experienced throughout her weight loss journey.

The 37-year-old singer appears on the cover of Women’s Health U.K.’s September issue, where she reflects on how her relationship with her body has evolved and shares her views on self-love and body positivity.

“I like how I look now,” she said. “I still think I’m big. I’m still wearing plus-size clothing. I have the same rolls. I got the same belly, the same thighs – I think I’m just a smaller version.”

Lizzo emphasized that embracing body positivity doesn’t mean staying the same physically. “Body positivity is the radical act of daring to exist loudly and proudly in a society that told you you shouldn’t exist,” she explained.

Since 2023, Lizzo has been candidly documenting what she calls her “weight release journey” on social media. In the interview, she opened up about past struggles with binge eating, often triggered by anxiety or stress.

“There were times when I would eat so much that my stomach hurt,” she told Women’s Health U.K. “When I was done, I would be so uncomfortable, I couldn’t breathe and wouldn’t let anyone know. I would hide it. I had so much food noise and connected so much emotion to food. If I was sad, anxious, stressed or working a lot, I would snack and just eat constantly.”

Now, the “Good as Hell” artist says she has found a healthier approach to eating that allows her to enjoy food without guilt or excess. “It’s a beautiful balance where it’s like, if you allow yourself to have something, you can enjoy it without overindulging and hurting yourself,” she shared. “I’m so proud of myself for overcoming that.”

Back in January, Lizzo celebrated reaching her “weight release goal” by revealing she had lowered her BMI by 10.5. But even with her progress, she said she’s faced backlash over how her body has changed.

“Me saying I love myself in 2016 was offensive to people … How dare you love yourself! You are fat and Black and you’re a woman, so you shouldn’t love yourself,” she said. “I had to fight for that [to love myself]. And now I’m fighting again.”

Lizzo made it clear she won’t let the criticism define her. “It’s okay to release weight. It’s okay to gain weight after you’ve released weight, because what you’re not going to do is shame me if my body changes again and I get bigger,” she said.
