A 95-year-old man died and three other people were injured after a serious crash in Deer Park, Ill., authorities said.
The crash happened at about 3:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Quentin Road, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).
Deputies were first called to the intersection for a report of a disabled vehicle. Shortly afterward, they were notified that a serious traffic crash had occurred at the same location.
A preliminary investigation found that a 2006 Honda Accord broke down and became disabled in the center westbound lane of Lake Cook Road, the LCSO said.
Authorities said the driver of the Accord got out of the vehicle and began looking underneath the engine area, based on witness accounts.
Investigators believe a 2024 Honda HR-V driven by a 30-year-old man from Cary then struck the Accord from behind. The 95-year-old man suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three other people were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said. Those injured include the HR-V driver, a 30-year-old woman from Arlington Heights who was a passenger in the SUV, and a 77-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Accord. None of the injured individuals were identified by name.
Officials also said a school bus was sideswiped during the crash. The bus driver was the only person on board at the time and was not hurt.
The investigation remains ongoing.
