Nedas Revuckas, the 19-year-old charged in the killing of a pregnant woman in Downers Grove, Illinois, is hospitalized after suffering self-inflicted injuries while in custody.

Revuckas is in critical condition, according to a preliminary investigation cited by WGN. The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office said he was injured around 5 p.m. local time on Thursday, Jan. 29, inside his housing unit at the DuPage County Correctional Center, NBC Chicago reported.

Officials said medical staff at the correctional facility provided immediate treatment before Revuckas was transported to a local hospital. Authorities do not believe anyone else was involved.

The hospitalization happened the same day Revuckas was denied pretrial release in the case connected to the death of Eliza Morales, 30, who authorities allege was stabbed to death.

Morales — a mother of a 2-year-old girl and five months pregnant with her second daughter — was stabbed 70 times at her family’s apartment on Monday, Jan. 26, ABC 7 Chicago reported.

Police said Morales’ husband, Gabriel Morales, had listed a pickup truck for sale on Marketplace and that Revuckas arrived at the apartment to buy it. Investigators allege Revuckas became upset about the condition of the vehicle and then attacked Morales, according to ABC 7.

Surveillance video showed Morales giving Revuckas a screwdriver to switch the vehicle’s license plates, WGN reported. Minutes later, he was seen approaching the apartment door with the tool behind his back, the outlet reported, citing police. About 20 minutes after that, smoke could be seen coming from the apartment door, WGN reported.

Police and firefighters responded soon after, extinguished a fire inside the apartment, and found Morales dead at the scene.

Investigators said Morales tried to stop Revuckas from entering and attacking her, ABC 7 reported. Revuckas told investigators that Morales “mentioned she was pregnant” during the struggle, but police allege he continued to stab her multiple times.

Authorities also allege he injured Morales’ dog, which attempted to protect her, according to WGN.

Revuckas appeared in court on Wednesday, Jan. 28, and faces charges including first-degree murder, robbery, arson, homicide of an unborn child, and animal cruelty.
