A man is in custody after allegedly claiming he had a bomb and making threatening statements — including death threats against President Donald Trump — during a flight from London to Scotland.
The 41-year-old, whose name has not been released, was aboard an easyJet flight from London Luton Airport to Glasgow on Sunday, July 27, when he suddenly stood up and shouted, “Stop the plane!” according to eyewitness video reported by the Daily Mail and BBC.
He then yelled, “Find the bomb on the plane,” followed by “Death to America. Death to Trump.” The man continued by shouting “Allahu Akbar” multiple times before fellow passengers subdued him. One tackled him to the floor while another restrained him and ordered him not to move.
Flight crew quickly announced the plane would be landing shortly as passengers tried to determine whether the man had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Some asked directly if he was actually carrying a bomb.
Police Scotland confirmed to PEOPLE that the man was arrested upon landing and remains in custody as of Monday. They added that the investigation is ongoing, and counterterrorism officers are reviewing videos of the incident circulating on social media.
Authorities said, “At this time, we believe the incident was contained and that nobody else was involved.”
An easyJet spokesperson confirmed that the passenger was removed due to “behavior onboard” and emphasized that crew are trained to respond quickly in situations that could compromise flight safety.
“The safety and well-being of our customers and crew is always easyJet’s highest priority,” the airline said in a statement.
Police have not yet announced what charges the man may face. It is also unclear if he has retained legal representation.
