A man allegedly attempted to kidnap a toddler at a grocery store in Northern Italy on Saturday, Feb. 14, according to Italian State Police.
Surveillance footage shows a mother leaving a grocery store at the Esselunga mall in Bergamo with her 1-year-old daughter when a man suddenly grabbed the child. The mother held on tightly, trying to keep him from pulling the girl away.
Shoppers nearby noticed the struggle and rushed in to help, gathering around the pair both inside and outside the store.
Police responded to the scene and arrested the man, authorities said. Investigators opened a case and began interviewing witnesses.
The suspect was charged with attempted aggravated kidnapping—because the alleged victim is a minor—and aggravated bodily harm.
The child was taken to a hospital and was found to have suffered a fractured femur.
