Relationships can be tricky, and when finances get involved, things can quickly spiral into uncomfortable territory.

One woman on Reddit shared that her boyfriend’s ongoing financial requests have left her rethinking their relationship — and whether his love comes with strings attached.

According to her post, her boyfriend owes the IRS about $1,650 in back taxes. The payment was originally due in March, but he filed for an extension until mid-October because he “couldn’t afford it.” Now, he’s asking to borrow the full amount from her.

At first, it seemed like an urgent one-time favor — but it wasn’t the first time he’d asked for financial help.

“I have let him borrow money for his rent before, four months ago, and I have yet to see that money,” she wrote, adding that he’d promised to pay her back but never did. On top of that, she’s usually the one covering their expenses when they go out together.

The imbalance has been weighing on her. She described herself as “fortunate to have a well-paying job and fair savings,” while her boyfriend “is barely making minimum wage” — and doesn’t seem motivated to change that.

“All he likes to do is spend,” she wrote, explaining that she’s urged him to save for his looming tax payment instead.

“I am very generous when it comes to money,” she said, “but when he asked again today, I told him no.”

Her boyfriend didn’t take the rejection well. He called her “mean” and accused her of not caring about him, warning that he could “end up in jail” if she didn’t help. After she stood firm, he started giving her the cold shoulder. “He has been acting pretty dry with me this morning now,” she shared.

In the comments, Reddit users didn’t hold back their opinions.

“You have to understand that your relationship can’t last,” one wrote. “Financial issues are one of the biggest reasons couples break up. Being on different pages when it comes to budgeting and money just doesn’t work.”

Another commenter urged her to draw the line before it’s too late: “Don’t let it happen to you! Keep your hard-earned money and demand better.”
