Living with roommates isn’t always easy, even when you set clear rules.
On Reddit, a man shared that he lives with two roommates and that they usually “get along.” He explained that he cooks at home often because “it saves money” and always labels his leftovers in the fridge with his name so there’s no confusion.
Recently, he was excited to eat some homemade lasagna he had spent “hours” making. But when he opened the fridge, he found that one of his roommates had already eaten half of it.
“I confronted him, and he just shrugged and said, ‘I was hungry, and it looked good,’” the man recalled. “No apology, nothing.”
The roommate brushed it off, saying the man was “making a big deal out of food.” But the poster felt disrespected, especially since the lasagna was clearly labeled.

Now, he’s wondering if he was right to call out his roommate, or if he’s overreacting. “It’s not like he ate all of it, but it feels like a boundary was crossed,” he wrote.
People who read the post said the man had every right to be upset. They pointed out that if he didn’t say anything, the roommate might keep taking his food. Some even suggested buying a mini fridge or a fridge lockbox to keep his meals safe.
One commenter wrote: “The only way to solve this is with a mini fridge in your room and a lock on your bedroom door. He will continue to push the boundary. This guy is profoundly disrespectful and couldn’t care less about how he treats you.”
Another added: “He’s just trying to make you feel badly about confronting his stealing. Don’t let him. There are fridge lockboxes that are not expensive. Put any of your cherished meals inside it and when he says something about it—‘gawd, don’t be so sensitive about food,’ or whatever—just tell him you did that to stop his thieving.”
