A Texas man who recently purchased a home at a property auction made a disturbing discovery after moving in — a deceased woman was found inside the residence.

According to a news release from the Addison Police Department, officers were called to the 1700 block of Planters Row on Wednesday, Oct. 29, for a welfare check. When they arrived, the new homeowner explained that upon entering the home, he was met with a strong odor and immediately left to call authorities.

Police said they found the body of an elderly woman who “appeared to have been deceased for some time.” The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office is currently working to determine the cause of death.

Authorities noted that there is “no reason to believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.” The woman was later identified as Pauline Williams, 69, a longtime resident of the property, according to a letter from the local homeowners association cited by ABC affiliate WFAA.

Neighbor Gary McIntyre, who lives in the Homes of Addison Place, told WFAA that he and other residents felt remorse for not checking on Williams sooner. He said the homeowners association had sent her past-due notices, and the local mail carrier had noticed a buildup of unopened mail.

In a letter shared with residents, the association urged neighbors to “respect the privacy of Ms. Williams’ family and the new homeowner during this time,” adding: “Thank you all for your understanding and compassion toward one another as neighbors.”

In an email to WFAA, the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office said that determining the cause and manner of death typically takes between 60 and 90 days.
