A woman ended her 18-month relationship after her boyfriend threw a “surprise” party for her and invited his family — despite her explicit request not to.

On Reddit, the 21-year-old shared that her relationship with her 22-year-old boyfriend had been “mostly good,” but he is extremely close with his family, texting them in a group chat constantly and sharing all the details of their relationship.

In contrast, she describes herself as “introverted” and from a smaller family where “they don’t share every detail.”

“I’ve told him multiple times that I need some boundaries, especially for special occasions. He always says he gets it, but then does stuff like this anyway,” she wrote.

She explained that for her 21st birthday last week, she had planned a quiet, romantic dinner at a fancy Italian restaurant she had been wanting to try — just the two of them. She made the reservation herself and clearly told her boyfriend she wanted the celebration to be “intimate” — no surprises, no family, just them.

He had promised to respect her wishes and said he would “make it the best night ever.”

But when she arrived at the restaurant, she was shocked to see him there with his parents, two sisters, grandmother, and aunt and uncle. He had changed the reservation and invited his family without telling her.

“I was shocked and honestly felt ambushed. I tried to play it cool at first, but inside I was panicking because I’m not great with crowds, and this was supposed to be my night,” she shared.

Halfway through the dinner, she excused herself to the bathroom and texted him that she was upset and felt like he had ignored her boundaries again.

He replied that it was “no big deal” and that his family loved her, so she “should be grateful.” After the dinner, they argued in the car, and he told her she embarrassed him by not being “more enthusiastic.” His mother also texted her, saying she had “hurt their feelings” by seeming “distant” at the dinner.

The next day, the woman ended the relationship. “I told him I can’t be with someone who doesn’t listen to my needs and steamrolls me with his family’s involvement,” she said.

Her ex-boyfriend has since been calling and texting her, claiming she is “overreacting” to what he thought was a “sweet gesture.” His family also got involved, labeling her a “drama queen.”

While some people in her life thought she was too harsh, Reddit users overwhelmingly supported her decision.

“No, you are not overreacting. Like it’s nice to be surprised like that, but when you have explicitly told him and set a boundary, he should respect it, period. Moving forward, you would not be able to trust him, and that is important,” one commenter wrote, emphasizing that the day was meant to focus on her wishes.

“Even if you hadn’t specifically requested that no family be included, it’s bizarre to me that someone would think bringing their whole family to their partner’s birthday dinner would be a fun surprise,” another user added.
