Neighbors are in shock after a man and woman were brutally killed in their Melbourne home.

Athena Georgopoulos, 39, who was five months pregnant, and her partner Andrew Gunn, 50, were found dead inside their Mount Waverley apartment on Monday, Aug. 11. Reports say Gunn was decapitated, and his head was found on a spike. The apartment was also covered in graffiti.

Neighbor Ben Scott-Sandvik said he was horrified when he discovered the couple’s bodies. “No one should have to see what I saw,” he told the Herald Sun. “And nobody should have to live knowing this happened to their families.”

Another neighbor, Dimmi, who knew Athena and her mother, also expressed sadness. “I came back and told my husband that a murder had happened here,” she said. “I didn’t hear anything that night and didn’t even know she lived there.”

Dimmi added that she knew Athena as a child and described her as “a lovely girl. A very nice girl. I’m so, so sad.”

Athena’s mother, Petty Georgopoulos, shared a heartfelt message on social media. “I will not cease to always love you,” she wrote in Greek. “Until we meet again, my daughter, in the angel’s light.”

Police arrested a suspect just hours after the bodies were found. Ross Judd, 34, who is unhoused, was taken into custody at a nearby train station. Authorities said he had blood on his shirt at the time of his arrest. He has been charged with two counts of murder and is scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

Police said the suspect appeared to have known the couple, though the exact nature of their relationship has not been revealed.

Victoria Police confirmed the timeline in a Facebook post: “Homicide Squad detectives were called to an address in Adrienne Crescent where a 39-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man were found deceased around 9:55 p.m. on Monday. A 34-year-old man was arrested at Westall train station about 1:40 a.m. yesterday morning. He has since been charged and will appear in court today.”
