One of the migrants injured during Wednesday’s shooting at an ICE detention facility in Dallas, Texas, remains in critical condition, according to his family.

Speaking to Spanish-language outlet KUVN-DT, Univision 23, Miguel Ángel García Medina’s brother said the Mexican national is “in very bad shape” in the hospital, with doctors reportedly discussing the possibility of disconnecting him from life support.

Newsweek reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment via email on Saturday outside of regular office hours.

The Context

On Wednesday, 29-year-old Joshua Jahn opened fire at a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, killing one detainee and seriously injuring two others before taking his own life. On Thursday, FBI Director Kash Patel stated that Jahn had left behind a note expressing his desire to “give ICE agents real terror.”

The shooting comes amid heightened concerns over political violence following the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk while speaking at a Utah college campus on September 10. In June, Minnesota Democratic state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were also fatally shot in a separate incident.

What To Know

García Medina’s brother told Univision that he was shot in the neck, stomach, back, and side during the attack. A house painter who had lived in the United States for the past two decades, García Medina is now hospitalized in serious condition and has undergone at least two surgeries.

Gutiérrez said, “His wife tells me—because I don’t talk with the doctors—that he is in very bad shape and they want to disconnect him, because he is only living on machines; the machines are what is keeping him alive.”

García Medina is originally from San Luis Potosí in central Mexico. Their mother, who was deported from the U.S. a few months ago, has been consulting lawyers about reentering the country to visit her son since the shooting. Gutiérrez added that he does not know why his brother was in ICE detention at the time of the incident.

A GoFundMe campaign, reportedly set up by García Medina’s wife’s sibling, has raised over $17,400 toward its $50,000 goal. According to the fundraiser, the funds will support medical costs, as well as the financial needs of García Medina’s wife and baby. Newsweek has not independently verified the fundraiser.

ICE has not yet formally identified the victims of Wednesday’s shooting.

What People Are Saying

Reacting to the attack, President Trump stated: “The radical left is causing the problem … It’s going to get worse and ultimately, it’s going to go back on them. Bad things happen when they play these games. I’ll give you a little clue, the right is a lot tougher than the left and the right is not doing this. And they better not get them energized because it won’t be good for the left.”

What Happens Next

Authorities are expected to release more information about the victims of Wednesday’s attack in the coming days.
